I finally have a yard after moving into my first house and I am interested in growing a garden when it gets warmer. What are the best materials, tips, or plants that would be best for my project?
I heard that growing marigolds with your veggies will combat bugs, is this true? Are there any other flowers that do this too?

to build a raised veggie garden make sure to use a non pressure treated wood….pine will do. Do not use old railway ties as they are riddled with chemicals.
If you are building this garden above turf make sure to remove the turf before continuing. Leaving the turf will cause it to break down in turn stealing nitrogen from the soil above, therefore stunting the growth of your garden.
I found a great article that you can read in my source links. It will give you a great start on getting started.
Marigolds are a natural way of combating pests in the garden…heck have you ever smelled one? They keep me away too! There are other organic means of keeping pests away too.
Keep your garden away from ‘Black Walnut’ trees as well as they will poison the soil stunting the growth of your garden.

As far as raised beds go any material will work. The important part is to raise the bed 22″-26″ tall. 4′x4′ or 6′x4′ are the best sizes for workability. Add a lot of compost, leaf-mulch, well composted organics stuffs and dig it in. Soil preparation is the most important part.
Happy veggies !
If your garden will be going in a grassy area, spray that area with a vegetation killer. After the grass turns brown, start rototilling it back into the soil. It’s best to use a rear-tine tiller. It may take 3-4 times. At the lost time you can introduce a 13-13-13 fertilizer. Build your raised bed with whatever you want. Remember this. Stone lasts forever and wood doesn’t. (Any kind)
I made my garden out of center blocks, stacked two high, 4 by 8 plywood as the base. Filled with cow manure and top soil, then layered with some Miracle grow gardening soil!
It has been weed free for 4 years!
And my veggies are to die for. Plan on making it bigger this year!
Looks really cute with decorative pots of herbs placed on the center blocks, along with some yard art!
Plant whatever you will eat!
Have fun, you can always change it!
marigolds get rid of rabbits. just use pesticides for insects. they aren’ that big a deal…
just use some pine 2×4s and nails. then add potting soil to fill it in.
know any one with old water bed frame? stain it with a waterproof deck stain. Put wire mesh on bottom if you want it will keep gopher out. fill with good top soil. marigolds keep aphids out i heard.
